BREAKING POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION...
READ ABOUT US…
Young people in Delft face a multitude of challenges that can lead them towards the dangerous allure of gangsterism at a disturbingly young age.
Factors such as economic hardship, lack of access to positive role models, and limited recreational opportunities create an environment where criminal activity can seem appealing.
However, evidence shows that education plays a crucial role in altering this trajectory.
By providing young people with the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities, education can empower them to pursue constructive paths and make better life choices.
Programs that emphasize mentorship, vocational training, and academic support can significantly help in steering youths away from the temptations of a criminal lifestyle, offering them hope and a brighter future.
Many children in Delft face significant challenges in their education, with many either not attending school at all or dropping out during high school.
Recognizing these difficulties, one of our primary objectives at the BLSC is to ensure that every student who participates in our program successfully completes their secondary education, which encompasses both primary and high school levels.
When we launched the BLSC, originally known as The Homework Club, we welcomed approximately 17 students.
Since those early days, our program has experienced consistent and impressive growth, and we now serve a vibrant community of about 80 primary and high school students who come to BLSC every weekday afternoon.
During these sessions, students receive valuable assistance with their schoolwork, which helps them build confidence and competence in their academic abilities.
We also run a feeding scheme throughout the week where we aim to reduce hunger and improve nutrition among the learners.
Our program is managed by qualified teachers and dedicated community volunteers, who work together to create a nurturing, safe, and supportive academic environment.
This approach allows children to not only address their immediate educational needs but also develop a love for learning and a sense of belonging within the community.
A crucial factor in our success, particularly for our high school students, has been the provision of access to WiFi and internet support.
This technological resource enables students to engage with digital learning tools and complete assignments more effectively, further enhancing their academic performance.
By addressing both educational guidance and technological access, we are helping equip these young learners with the tools they need to succeed in their educational journeys.

My name is Angel Mahlangu, and I am a former learner and a current tutor at BLSC. I am also a first year student at CPUT. In 2018, I took my steps into BLSC seeking guidance as a grade 7 student. Little did I know that this journey would transform my life. I was struggling with my schoolwork and I needed help. BLSC tutors guided me and I improved. Over the years I kept going back because I enjoyed being at the Centre. The tutors were patient, kind, warm hearted, knowledgeable and understanding. I learned to study better and I gained confidence. What amazed me was how technology helped us learn. The Centre used interactive software, online resources and digital tools to make studying more engaging. I could search, do projects and research on certain things, photocopying, watching tutorials on the TV, computer or laptop, etc. There are also study guides that I used during my high school years which helped me a lot. I was/am blessed to be part of the third or fourth industrial revolution of technology that has helped me and my peers, and I know it will help future learners. BLSC didn’t just feed my mind. It also nourished my body and hunger. The feeding scheme provided healthy meals and snacks, ensuring I had the energy to focus on my studies. It is also beneficial for kids who come from school hungry because they go home full. As I entered grade 10, I realised the impact BLSC had on my life. I wanted to pay it forward, inspiring others as I was inspired. So, I decided to become a tutor. Today, I stand proudly as a tutor at BLSC, guiding students who, like me, seek support. Sharing my knowledge and experience, I empower others to overcome their struggles/ This Centre, once my refuge, has become my platform to make a difference. My journey from learner to tutor embodies the Centre’s mission: empowering individuals through education and the BLSC’s motto: BREAKING POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION. I am grateful for the transformative experience, and I am honoured to contribute to the next generation’s success.
